David and Morgan try making a gingerbread recipe from the 1840s! Do you think they nailed it? Or failed it?

MOLINE, Ill. — With the holiday season just around the corner, it's the perfect time to try a new gingerbread recipe! Hot water gingerbread is perfect for parties and family gatherings.

The recipe for Hot Water Gingerbread has been around since the 1840's.

Ingredients needed:

  • 2.5 cups flour
  • 2 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 2 tsp. ginger
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 cup molasses (dark)
  • 3/4 cup browns sugar (dark)
  • 3/4 cup cooking oil
  • 1 cup hot water

All you do:

  1. Sift the dry ingredients twice
  2. Beat the eggs
  3. Add the sugar, oil and molasses to the eggs and beat till smooth. (Hint: Measure the oil first and then measure the molasses in the same cup so the molasses will come out easily.)
  4. Quickly stir in the hot water and add this mixture to the dry ingredients
  5. Beat till smooth
  6. Pour into a greased pan 9 or 10 inches square
  7. Bake for 30 minutes at 375 degrees
  8. Serve warm with whipped cream
