More than a dozen injured in Illinois River boat explosion

Officials said a boat exploded Saturday afternoon just after refueling on the Illinois River near Seneca, injuring 14 people.

SENECA, Ill. — There were 14 people injured after a boat exploded Saturday afternoon, May 28 on the Illinois River near Seneca, Illinois.

According to the Illinois Conservation Police, at about 4:20 p.m. Saturday, a boat about 40 feet long carrying 17 people suddenly exploded at Springbrook Marina in Seneca, injuring most of the passengers.

According to interviews and video footage obtained by authorities, the explosion came from inside the boat, which had just finished refueling not long before the explosion.

A total of 14 people were injured in the incident and sent to the hospital for treatment, including 13 passengers and a marine employee.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Illinois Conservation Police were at the scene for much of the weekend removing debris and the sunken vessel from the area.

The incident remained under investigation as of Sunday afternoon, May 30.
