Bettendorf names new boys' basketball coach

Alvin Vesey will become the new head coach for the boys' basketball team pending school board approval.

BETTENDORF, Iowa — A new head coach has been named for the Bettendorf Bulldogs.

Bettendorf High School Athletic Director Zach Shay announced the hiring of Alvin Vesey as the new head coach of the boys' basketball program, pending school board approval. He is replacing former head coach Curtis Clark, who stepped down from the position earlier this month after 12 years with the Bulldogs.

Vesey has over 17 years of experience coaching at Bettendorf and has been an assistant at BHS for the last 12 years.

“Bettendorf High School is getting an extraordinary coach and person in Alvin Vesey," Shay said in a press release. "Coach Vesey bleeds Black and Gold. He was a multisport athlete at BHS playing football, basketball, and track for the Bulldogs. His competitiveness, intensity, and passion for developing young men on and off the court is exactly what we are looking for in our next basketball coach. Alvin has a love for the game, and his plan is to continue to elevate Bettendorf Boys’ basketball to new levels of success."

Vesey was a part of the 2023-24 season where the Bulldogs were named Mississippi Athletic Conference Champions and made it to the IHSAA state semi-finals

“Over the course of my time as the AD at Bettendorf High School, I have been impressed with Alvin’s approach to building an elite culture and his desire to fully immerse himself in all corners of the Bulldog Nation. I could not be more excited about the future of our boys’ basketball program," Shay added in the release.

Vesey is a 2003 Bettendorf High School graduate and earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Northern Iowa, where he also played football for the Panthers.
