Man injured in Rock Island weekend shooting dies in hospital Sunday

25-year-old Niyonkuru Cornelio experienced severe complications and died Sunday after he was shot Saturday afternoon.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — A man who was shot in Rock Island on Saturday later died in the hospital due to surgery complications, according to the Rock Island Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division.

The man, now identified as 25-year-old Niyonkuru Cornelio, sustained his injuries in a Saturday, Oct. 15 shooting in the 500 block of 25th Street. He was transported to a local hospital with what was believed to be a non-life-threatening wound.

Cornelio was later transferred to a larger hospital where he went into surgery to treat the injury. However, he suffered severe complications during the procedure and died on Sunday.

RIPD is now treating the case as a homicide. No further information is currently available, and the suspect is still at large.
