Natural gas leak causes closure of intersection in downtown Rock Island

Officials say a contractor working in the area damaged a natural gas service line.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — Update as of 4:30 p.m. Thursday: A spokesperson with the City fo Rock Island says the intersection has been cleared and is back open. All fire and MidAmerican trucks have left.

Rock Island city officials are warning the public of a natural gas leak in downtown.

According to a release sent shortly before 10:30 a.m., Rock Island firefighters are at the area of 17th Street and 3rd Avenue for a natural gas leak. It was reported around 9 a.m. Officials say a contractor working in the area damaged a natural gas service line. 

Rock Island Fire Chief Robert Graff said the area is closed off so MidAmerican Energy can fix the leak. The public is asked to avoid the area until further notice. Officials do not know how long the repair will take.
