The Quad Cities' only dedicated gluten-free bakery celebrates 1 year

Life Breads started in Catherine & Todd Herzog's house before turning into a farmers market staple. Now, it's celebrating 1 year at its brick-and-mortar location.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — Life Breads, the Quad City's only dedicated gluten-free bakery, is inviting the public in on its one-year celebration on Monday, April 29.

The anniversary party will run immediately after closing from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. There will be an inflatable photo booth, balloons, a DIY sprinkles workshop, refreshments, limited anniversary t-shirt sales and the release of a new menu.

The event is family-friendly and free. Life Breads is located at 1509 N. Harrison Street in Davenport.

Catherine and Todd Herzog started Life Breads out of their home. The pair has a family history of Celiac disease and gluten intolerance and wanted to provide homemade, gluten-free treats that tasted delicious.

Life Breads quickly became a fan favorite at local farmers' markets. That enthusiasm spilled over into the bakery's brick-and-mortar location. The bakery sold out on its opening day within two hours.

As a dedicated gluten-free bakery, Life Breads carries zero gluten-containing products or ingredients. The bakery also has a strict 'No Outside Food or Drink' policy to protect those with severe allergies or Celiac from any cross-contact.

“We’ve had so many with severe allergies or Celiac’s come in who had just given up until we opened," said General Manager Meg Reed. "I’ve cried with and hugged so many customers just because this meant so much to them. It’s everything to them and that’s why we do it.”

Life Breads has expanded to new products over the last year, including bagels, pizza crusts, no-rye bread and vegan bread. The bakery also has hot tea and coffee for sale.

May kicks off the bakery's month-long campaign for Celiac Awareness Month. Life Breads will be handing out awareness ribbons as well as promoting the Quad Cities' chapter group for the National Celiac Association.
