Roof of vacant building collapses in Clinton

The City had previously planned to demolish the building in fiscal year 2025.

CLINTON, Iowa — The roof of a vacant building in Clinton, Iowa collapsed over the weekend.

According to Clinton city officials, the roof of 405 7th Ave. S collapsed at some point between May 18 and 19. Officials said the building was vacant and was owned by the City after the previous owner allowed it to fall into disrepair.

City officials said they were already planning to demolish the building during fiscal year 2025, and asbestos remediation had already been completed. Following the roof collapse, officials are working to create a plan to begin tearing down the structure.

The alley to the south of the building, along with nearby parking spaces on the west and north sides of the buildings, are closed to traffic until further notice. The spaces will be reopened once demolition is completed.
