High winds in Maquoketa rip roof off Eagles Club, damages two other buildings

The Eagles Club will decide its next steps based on what a structural engineer determines.

MAQUOKETA, Iowa — On Tuesday, May 21, damaging winds swept through Maquoketa, blowing the roof off the Eagles Club.

That debris crashed into a nearby apartment building, destroying an awning and damaging the garage. The winds also destroyed a dog run at WagMore, a dog boarding and training facility.

Wade Heinrich and his wife purchased the facility just nine months ago. Without a play area, they can't board any dogs.

"So unfortunately, we had a bunch of dogs scheduled for this weekend and next weekend with the holiday, and we had to call them and cancel everything," Heinrich said.

He said there were dogs outside Tuesday night, but they were all either picked up by their owners or taken to the couple's house, where they have another outdoor kennel.

But even with this blow, Heinrich said he isn't shaken.

"You don't know what life's gonna throw at you, but we'll make it through," Heinrich said.

The worst of the damage was next door at the Eagles Club. Insulation from the roof covered every surface.

Mike Duhme is the secretary and a trustee for the club. He was in the building when the storm hit.

"We ordered everybody into the coolers, for safety, and when we got done, we had seen a lot of insulation outside," Duhme said. "And we went to the back and we had noticed the roof was gone."

Duhme said the club is waiting for a structural engineer to assess the building and decide if it's worth repairing. For Wednesday morning, though, the focus was on cleanup.

"We took out a lot of the appliances last night to minimize the damage," Duhme said. "Lot of volunteers last night, lot of help today, but we can't do a lot until we know what's gonna happen here."

News 8 also spoke to the apartment's owner — she said none of her tenants were hurt. Heinrich and Duhme also said nobody was injured.
