City of Rock Island to celebrate Douglas Park renovations during Party in the Park

Since 2016, Douglas Park has undergone numerous improvements that include a renovated concession stand and press box, a new playground and much more.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — The Rock Island Park and Recreation Department invites the community to celebrate the completion of renovations in Douglas Park with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, May 22.

Since renovation began in 2016, there have been several improvements including a renovated concession stand and press box; a paved parking lot with enhanced landscaping; a new playground perimeter walkway with benches; improved backstops and fencing; new turf; lighting and lighted flag poles; restored ticket booths; ADA-compliant restroom facilities; and others.

“If you haven’t had the chance to witness the transformation of Douglas Park and are looking for free family fun, you should come out and enjoy the festivities,” said Parks and Recreation Director John Gripp. “It’s a testament to the collaborative efforts of the Friends of Douglas Park, grant contributions and generous private donations that we’ve revitalized this park, which holds such a significant sports legacy.”

The Party in the Park celebration will begin at 5 p.m. and go until 7 p.m. with free activities for all ages. The youth is invited to participate in a friendly game of kickball against the Rock Island Police Department called "Kick it with a cop."

Other activities include face painting, a caricature artist, bounce houses and yard games. Attendees can enjoy free hot dogs, popcorn, water and Kona Ice while supplies last, with the concession stand also offering a variety of food and beverage options for purchase.

Douglas Park has a full schedule of events including games featuring the Quad City 76ers, Rock Island Independents and various youth sports such as baseball, soccer, flag football, sports camps and rental opportunities.
