LE CLAIRE, Iowa — A large rock that was ejected from a dump truck hit an SUV, causing a crash and leaving the driver with life-threatening injuries.

A 43-year-old LeClaire woman was headed southbound on North Cody Road, Tuesday morning, August 24, when the rock hit her 2020 Hyundai Palisade, according to LeClaire Police Chief Shane Themas. The rock had come from a dump truck that was headed the opposite direction around 9:15 a.m., driving near Benton Street.

Chief Themas said the driver then veered off the roadway and crashed into an embankment.  She was taken to a local hospital before being airlifted to Iowa City for treatment.

There was nobody else in the SUV with her.

Several agencies responded to the scene including the LeClaire Police Department, the LeClaire Fire Department, the Scott County Accident Investigation Team,  the Princeton Police Department and MedForce.  The investigation remains underway.
