MOLINE, Ill. — A man has been arrested following a nearly three-hour standoff Sunday afternoon in Moline, officials say.

Around 11:30 a.m. on May 5, the Moline Police Department received a 911 call regarding a domestic disturbance at the 3200 block of 40th Street, across the street from the Moline Public Library. A person at the residence told police there was a man with a gun who was distraught, according to a press release.

Upon responding to the scene, 27-year-old Cayne Wilford of Moline had barricaded himself in the garage with a firearm. Police say a perimeter was established to secure the area and the department deployed numerous resources to the location to mitigate any risk and attempt to de-escalate the situation.

Officers trained as negotiators spent nearly three hours with Wilford before he fired a gunshot around 1:41 p.m. inside the garage. He later surrendered at 2:34 p.m. and was peacefully taken into custody. Police say no one was injured in the incident.

“This has been an extremely tense and difficult day in the city of Moline," Moline Police Chief Darren Gault said in a press release. "The challenges started early this morning as our officers working the midnight shift responded to a homicide scene. Several of those officers then responded back to work a few hours later to assist on this incident because they had specialized skills and training on various teams in the police department.

"Our resources were stretched thin today, but the officers working in Moline are incredibly talented and dedicated to serving the community. I’m grateful for their hard work, training and dedication to serve with such professionalism. I’m especially thankful for the long hours many of them worked today. From patrol officers to detectives, crisis negotiators to tactical team members and our telecommunicators at QCOMM911, everyone pitched in and performed valiantly."

Wilford was charged with aggravated assault and aggravated discharge of a firearm and is being held in the Rock Island County Jail.
