2024 Jefferson Awards: Meet the Monmouth duo giving animals a new opportunity in life

Phillip Cooper and Brandy Woehler founded the Freedom Ride Animal Rescue organization in 2022.

MONMOUTH, Ill. — In 2022, Phillip Cooper and Brandy Woehler came together and founded the Freedom Ride Animal Rescue. The mission of the organization is to help get animals in dangerous situations to a safer position.

"I've been doing this for over 25 years," Cooper said. "I've gone as far as Oklahoma to save animals from kill shelters and puppy mills just to move them to a humane society."

It's the passion for animals that motivates not only Cooper but also Woehler.

"I just love being around animals," Woehler said. "I want to be able to save as many as I can and teaming up with Phil, it brings us many opportunities."

The 'rescue without walls' organization traveled nearly 14,000 miles last year, saving over 200 animals along the way. Woehler says they've created relationships with several shelters, an important part of their mission.

"If we didn't have the relationships, it would be hard to place animals as quickly as we do," Woehler added. "Having so much support from others, it's what helps us do what we do."

So far this year, they've traveled nearly a thousand miles, rescuing 20 animals. Cooper says he cannot imagine not doing what he does.

"Anytime that we get a phone call for an animal that needs help, we're in the car and on the way," Cooper added. "Anybody can do this. You don't have to have a lot of money to do this. As long as you have a somewhat reliable vehicle, and a few bucks for gas, you can help make an impact."

On Feb. 17, Freedom Ride Animal Rescue will host a free mobile microchip clinic at the Pet Supplies Plus in Galesburg. It begins at 2 p.m. and ends at 5 p.m.
