JOHNSON COUNTY, Iowa — The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is looking into an inmate death at the Johnson County Jail, according to a press release

According to the sheriff's office, 36-year-old Nathaniel Davis Jr. was booked into the county jail on March 10 to serve a seven-day sentence. Around 6:10 p.m. on March 14, police say a deputy observed Davis fall over in a camera monitor.

The sheriff's office says staff responded to the cell and determined Davis was having a medical emergency. Staff began CPR and used an automatic external defibrillator, according to the release. He was transported to the University of Iowa Hospital Emergency Department where he later passed away on March 19.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office has requested the Iowa DCI to investigate the incident. Officials say an autopsy will be conducted through the county medical examiner's office and that the state jail inspector has been notified as well.
