Davenport Central senior surprised with $20,000 scholarship

Samuel Bevans was awarded the 2024 Kathryn Bell Tate Scholarship but didn't know he was going to receive it until the presentation.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — A Davenport Central senior got the best gift a soon-to-be college student could ask for — a scholarship to help make his educational dreams come true. And even better, it's a gift that he never saw coming.

On Tuesday, April 30, Samuel Bevans was surprised with the 2024 Kathryn Bell Tate Scholarship. The scholarship is given to one student each year and is paid out in $5,000 installments over the course of four years of higher education. Bevans is headed to Iowa State University in Ames to study aerospace engineering. He hopes to use that knowledge to continue improving the lives of others, and he's already found one way to make an impact when he helped a classmate with a disability communicate with others.

"He needed movement on an iPad screen, so I helped 3D print a little shell that he could clip on so his fingers could go into the little slots so he could communicate better," Bevans said.

The Kathryn Bell Tate Scholarship is open to children of full-time employees of the Davenport Community School District.
