Galesburg football coach charged with domestic battery

On Tuesday, April 23, Galesburg Police responded to 39-year-old Derrek Blackwell's residence after receiving a report of domestic physical violence.

GALESBURG, Ill. — Galesburg's head football coach was recently arrested on domestic battery charges, according to a police report obtained by News 8 in a records request.

On Tuesday, April 23 around 7:30 p.m., Galesburg Police responded to 39-year-old Derrek Blackwell's residence after receiving a report of domestic physical violence. According to the report, the victim told police that Blackwell pushed them down. Officers say they were able to observe two injuries to the victim's face and knee.

Blackwell denies touching the person, according to the police report. Due to the victim's statement and visible injuries, police placed Blackwell under arrest. Court records show he faces one domestic battery charge, a class A misdemeanor.

News 8 reached out to the Galesburg Community School District on the incident since Blackwell is a district employee. Superintendent John Asplund said they had no comment, adding the district does not comment on personnel matters.
