Iowa DNR searching for answers after fire burns state's largest sycamore tree

The tree is believed to be around 350 years old.

DANVILLE, Iowa — The future of Iowa's largest sycamore tree is in doubt after a fire.

According to Geode State Park Ranger Andrew Kuckler, staff members at Geode State Park were notified of a burning tree by a visitor to the park on Sunday, Feb. 18. Staff were able to extinguish that fire, but its chances of survival are uncertain. The tree is certified as the largest sycamore in the entire state and is believed to be approximately 350 years old.

The exact cause of the fire is uncertain, but the Iowa DNR said that it considers the fire "suspicious" in a press release. Anyone with information relating to this fire is asked to contact Kuckler at 319-392-4601. Sources are able to remain anonymous.
