DAVENPORT, Iowa — After the Tuesday, May 21 tornado brought destruction to Greenfield, Iowa, one business owner in East Moline made a plan to bring food and supplies.
Food truck Toni's Smokin' Grill is going to Greenfield on May 25 to help families recovering after the extreme weather.
"The stories that I've been hearing about people who don't have basements, and running and trying to take cover, all the stuff that you see that's devastated. How can you not help?" Owner Toni Bare said.
With the help of manager Andre Cato, they're getting ready to make hot meals and hundreds of sandwiches.
"It's a blessing. It's definitely a blessing. There's a lot of love going on right now," Cato said.
That blessing is the donations from businesses, Bare's customers and the community.
"Right now we have enough for 500 of the sack lunches. This is after they eat a hot meal from us," Bare said.
Bare is also grateful for online donations from locals and even supporters from several states away.
"My thing is feeding souls, you know? And that means so much than just the actual doing of eating," she said.
For Bare and Cato, the work is about warming people's hearts when they can't go back to the place they call home.
"Food is always something you can always relate to home, and to make you feel homely you know the things you remember when you were younger, when it comes to eating food? That's feeding the soul," Cato said.
