Illnesses spike at height of holiday season

Amana Care Clinic in Davenport says it's seen a significant increase in patients since Thanksgiving.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — Amana Care Clinic in Davenport says it's seen a significant increase in traffic since Thanksgiving. With Christmas just a week away, they shared some of the best ways you can protect yourself and loved ones during the holiday season.

Nurse Practitioner Heather Lowry has seen first-hand how the spread of illnesses has impacted the Quad Cities community.

"We've seen a lot of COVID the last few weeks. We've seen a lot of influenza A," Lowry said.

The clinic, located at 2612 W. Kimberly Rd. in Davenport, has been dealing with an influx of viral infections.

"There's always something going around. Right now, there's a viral stomach bug," Lowry said.

According to the CDC, most of the US had reported minimal hospital visits for respiratory illnesses nine weeks ago. While Iowa is still reporting low visits, Illinois is now reporting respiratory hospital visits at a moderate level.

"Just try to stay away from those that are higher risk. The young ones and the older patients or family members, pregnant family members, those people are all at higher risk for secondary issues with these viral infections," Lowry said.

Lowry said that the tips and tricks we learn as kids make a big difference in stopping viral infections.

"Lots of handwashing, coughing into your elbows not your hands. You know, use a tissue, throw them away immediately, wash your hands afterward," she said.

Amana Care Clinic officials recommend getting your flu shot if you haven't yet, as they expect to see another spike in patients during the new year.
