Iowa college students may get to keep a little more money in their wallets during the 2014-2015 school year.
The Iowa Senate and House approved a tuition freeze for the state’s three public colleges: the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, and the University of Northern Iowa, according to a report by the Des Moines Register.
On Wednesday, April 23, 2014 lawmakers approved a $986 million spending plan which would fund the regents universities and state education operations.
According to the report, in the plan, the State of Iowa would spend the following amounts in general aid: $231 million on the University of Iowa, $181 million on Iowa State University, and the University of Northern Iowa would get more than $89 million.
Each school also gets a four percent increase in state funding and University of Northern Iowa gets an extra $2.6 million. This is reportedly necessary to keep tuition at its current rate.
Bruce Rastetter, President of the Board of Regents thanked lawmakers for helping make a tuition freeze possible.
“On behalf of the Board of Regents I wish to thank the Joint Senate and House Education Appropriations Committee for their support of the regent universities,” Rastetter said Wednesday.
The measure is now headed to Governor Terry Branstad’s desk.
