CHICAGO – A shooting on Monday, Oct. 17 has brought Chicago’s homicide number to at least 600 in 2016, reports the Chicago Tribune. The year isn’t over, and that number is already a 190 increase from Chicago homicides in 2015. At least 3,475 people have been shot in the Chicago area.
Monday’s shooting happened in the West Englewood neighborhood as the group was standing in the front yard of a home. Police say another group walked up and started shooting, then ran away. No one was immediately taken into custody.
Police say a man in his 20s was shot in the head and died at the scene. The 13-year-old was last listed in critical but stable condition with gunshot wounds the right thigh. Three men in their 20s and 30s also were wounded and taken to hospitals for treatment.
Everytown for Gun Safety says weak gun laws in nearby states are one of the factors contributing to Chicago gun violence, and claim that three in five guns recovered at Chicago crime scenes were first sold in other states with the top contributors being Indiana, Mississippi and Wisconsin.
