'It's really fun to see': Cyclone, Hawkeye fans excited to see teams on national stage

Cyclones fan David Moore told Local 5 he has Iowa State going "all the way".

DES MOINES, Iowa — The University of Iowa's women's and Iowa State University men's basketball teams both advanced to the next round in their respective NCAA tournaments on Saturday.

For the fans who weren't watching their teams in person, many watched from afar back in the Des Moines metro.

Truman's K.C. Pizza Tavern, a well-known Kansas City sports joint, also welcomes many Hawkeye fans in on gameday. And when the game is on the biggest stage, Iowa fans pack Truman's to watch the No. 1-seeded Hawkeyes and star Caitlin Clark.

"It's gotta be Caitlin Clark," Hawkeye fan Ben Frommelt told Local 5 why this year's women's team is special. "She's all around, one of the best basketball players, you know, ever seen."

"Iowa's one of those state's that's commonly looked over when you look at the United States," added Hawkeye women's basketball fan, Tom Raduechel. "Just to see some team from our state be put on a national level of greatness. It's really fun to see."

Iowa blew out 16-seeded Holy Cross in the Hawkeyes' first-round matchup, and Hawkeye fans have their eyes on a championship.

Cyclone fans said the same thing Saturday night at Cowles Commons in downtown Des Moines, where an Iowa State men's basketball watch party took place.

Hundreds of fans cheered their team on, with some sitting shoulder-to-shoulder on foldable chairs, while others yelled and screamed at the projector screen standing.

The first half looked shaky for the second-seeded Cyclones in their matchup against seventh-seeded Washington State, but the second half is when Iowa State turned it on, and their fans turned up their cheering.

It was noticeable that the vibe had switched, with fans starting to share how confident they are in their team this tournament.

Cyclones fan David Moore told Local 5 he has Iowa State going "all the way".

Margie Morris, an Iowa State graduate from the '80s, said she only has Iowa State up until the Final Four. Still, she said she hopes she's wrong, because she wants to see them in the championship game in April.

Above all, both Cyclone and Hawkeye fans enjoyed getting to cheer their teams on together with fans from their respective fanbases.

"We have the Hawkeye, Iowa State mix for sure," Moore said.
