Why you should question any call to your hotel room

If you stay in a hotel and you get a call from someone from the front desk, it could be a scam.

If you stay in a hotel and you get a call from someone from the front desk, it could be a scam.

That cautionary statement comes from Jo Daviess County Sheriff Kevin Turner, who issued a warning about a possible telephone scam happening in his county.

“The scammer telephones a hotel and asks the front desk for a specific room number; the scammer (then) impersonates the front desk or the hotel corporate headquarters,” said a statement from Turner on Tuesday, March 15, 2016.

“The scammer will then notify the victim that there was an issue with their credit card, and asks them to verify the credit card number and mailing address,” the statement said.

That’s why Turner says you should “exercise extreme caution” if you receive any calls to your hotel room.  Any call about your credit card should be verified face-to-face with someone at the front desk of the hotel.
