Motorcyclists hold annual 'Blessing of the Bikes' in Bureau County

Bikers came from hours away to have their bikes blessed for the season.

LANGLEY, Ill. — Thousands of bikers came to Psycho Silo Saloon in rural Bureau County to have their bikes blessed. That means they're trying to stay safe on the road all year long.

Motorcycles covered the bar's 30 acres of land near the Hennepin Canal. This is the first event of the season for the saloon.

Manager Barbie Patnoe said safety has been the focus since the event started eight years ago.

"I've talked to so many today, they're from hours away, they've driven in last night and today," Patnoe said. "We just want to push that issue of everyone having a safe and great riding season."

She said drivers should be aware of how bikes move on the road.

"They're quick to turn, they're quick to stop, you're not only watching out for yourself, you're watching out for all the other vehicles that aren't educated on bike safety," Patnoe said.

As an added bonus, it's a great way to meet other bikers. Terry McClay is a veteran and long-time rider.

"You know, motorcycles and veterans go hand in hand," McClay said. "So it's a really great way to meet new vets and talk about some of our experiences."

He said drivers and bikers should be aware of their surroundings to keep each other safe.

"And if they get a blind spot, a blind spot for a car, you know is a lot different than a blind spot for a bike because you don't really see that bike until the last minute," McClay said.

With a new blessing, these bikers are ready to ride for another year.

Psycho Silo Saloon is open on weekends from May to October. They'll be holding a Jeep Blessing this coming Saturday, May 11.
