COAL VALLEY, Illinois -- A truck crashed into St. Maria Goretti Church after a driver suffered a sudden medical condition behind the wheel.
Shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 25, Coal Valley firefighters and police responded to reports that a vehicle had run into the church, located in the 200 block of 22nd Avenue.
The driver was taken to the hospital. Coal Valley police said the driver was later released. Aside from the driver's condition, there were no other reports of injuries from the crash.
Firefighters said the truck hit a beam that supports the church's roof. The building was later secured.
The pastor of the church said the portion where worship is held has been closed. It is yet to be determined whether they will be able to use the rest of the building.
