Police blocked streets in a residential area after a deputy was met with the sound of gunfire in an apartment house around 12th Street just east of N. Brady.

Police at the scene said the activity began when a Scott County deputy served an eviction notice at an upstairs unit in apartment house at 12th and Perry streets just before 9 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2014.  The deputy knocked and then stepped into the apartment, heard the sound of a gunshot, and immediately left the building.

More police were called into the area.  They surrounded the apartment house, blocked streets in the area and advised neighbors to evacuate.

A woman who lives nearby said she was originally told to take her children to the back end of her home.  She initially complied, then decided to leave the area with her kids.

Police said they had no further communication with the man in the apartment.

Streets around the building remained closed nearly two hours after the incident began.

At about 11:20 a.m., police said the man peacefully surrendered.
