Work is underway on a $15-million project to build a new Menards store in Davenport, Iowa.

Work is underway on a $15-million project to build a new Menards store in Davenport, Iowa.

A Davenport city blog called Doing it in Davenport reports crews have begun clearing trees and grading land on the site at 6600 Brady Street.

The new store will feature an expanded Menards layout that includes a full-service lumberyard, garden center, home improvement supplies and some groceries.  Developers also agreed to put a berm, a row of trees, a fence and a 50-foot green space barrier between the Menards property and its residential neighbors.

Menards officials are asking the city for a zoning change to allow the existing store location on 53rd Street to be used as a self-storage unit it the property isn’t sold before the new store opens in 2014.

The city blog says Menards previously converted two of its Wisconsin stores to self-storage operations.
