PRINCETON, Illinois - The Bureau County Sheriff's Department is investigating suspicious candy after a parent says they found marijuana laced candy inside their child’s candy bag.
The candy was found during trick or treating Sunday, October 30, 2016 in Manlius, a town of 350 people northwest of Princeton.
Police say the parent became suspicious after finding a candy bar with pictures of cannabis leaves on the wrapper. The bar tested positive for marijuana and is now forcing parents to double check their kid’s candy.
“It makes you angry and think what else isn't safe then? You don't think that would happen in a little town,” says Michelle Kepner.
Michelle lives in Manlius and heard about the marijuana laced candy from a Facebook friend.
For parent Drew Wilson, Halloween candy checks are a must.
“We make sure there are no holes in it and if there's any we throw it out,” says Drew.
Drew says he’s never seen anything like this before.
“If it's meant to be a joke, it's not funny. Marijuana for kids? That’s an adult decision,” added Drew.
For Lori and Steve Bonucci, they hope the trick doesn’t put Halloween up in smoke.
“I would not want someone to not come out because kids get such a kick out of Halloween. It’s such a big deal you can just see the joy on their little faces,” says Lori Bonucci.
