Explosion reported near Davenport bus stop

An explosion reportedly left a two-foot hole in the ground near a Davenport bus stop Friday morning, November 22, 2013.

An explosion reportedly left a two-foot hole in the ground near a Davenport bus stop Friday morning, November 22, 2013.

Initial reports indicated a box had possibly exploded at the bus stop near Burke Cleaners at 35th and Eastern Avenue around 9 a.m.  A witness reported a hole in the ground about two feet in diameter after the explosion.

Firefighters later said they thought an underground transformer was the source of the explosion.  A spokesperson for MidAmerican Energy later said the explosion happened in an above-ground secondary enclosure.

MidAmerican Energy reported more than 60 customers in Davenport were without power just after the explosion was reported, and the utility spokesperson said they thought the outages were likely linked to the equipment explosion.  Power was restored by early Friday afternoon.

No injuries were immediately reported.
