Driver dies after semi crash; I-80 closed temporarily

One man is dead after a semi crashed east of Des Moines early Friday morning on Interstate 80 in Jasper County. The vehicle hit a support beam of an overpass.

(WHO) — One man is dead after a semi crashed early Friday morning on Interstate 80 in Jasper County.

A driver passing by the crash reported seeing a semi off the road near Colfax around 5:15 a.m. It appears the semi was headed eastbound on I-80 and veered off the road, hitting the highway 117 bridge that goes over the interstate.

When emergency responders arrived they found the driver, 69-year-old Bruce Oatman of Idaho, unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office closed down the bridge for a short time Friday morning to make sure it was structurally safe for drivers, but it was reopened.

An initial investigation shows Oatman may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
