A 69-year-old man hunting deer in Iowa was hurt when the gun he was using exploded in his hands.

Theodore Larson of Cumming, Iowa was on an elevated stand south of Truro when he took a shot at a deer and the muzzleloader he was using exploded.

Larson reportedly lost a thumb in the explosion and his missing thumb was not found.  He was airlifted to a Des Moines hospital.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources investigators were working to try to find out why the weapon exploded.  Muzzleloaders are often reproductions of older weapons.
