Consumer Reports study finds elevated pesticide levels on some produce

According to the study, produce with the most significant levels of pesticides include potatoes, green beans, bell peppers, and frozen blueberries and strawberries.

ST. LOUIS — When it comes to eating healthy, everyone knows getting servings of fruits and vegetables can be key. But according to a new study by Consumer Reports, there can be something else hiding in those healthy options: pesticides.

In a comprehensive review of data from the United States Department of Agriculture, Consumer Reports found that pesticide levels can vary based on what type of food it is, how it was processed and even where it came from.

The produce with the most significant levels of pesticides include potatoes, green beans, bell peppers, and frozen blueberries and strawberries.

So how should you use this information?

Consumer Reports says pregnant women and children should limit their intake of produce with elevated pesticide levels because studies have shown exposure during pregnancy to a common class of pesticides called organophosphates was associated with poorer intellectual development and reduced lung function.

"Pregnancy and childhood are times of particular vulnerability to pesticides, in part because certain pesticides can be endocrine disruptors," the report said.
