DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A 19-year-old man accused of stabbing a Bettendorf High School classmate last April has pleaded guilty to a reduced assault charge in the case.
Drew Romkey pleaded guilty on Friday to assault causing serious injury, The Quad-City Times reports.
Romkey was originally charged with felony willful injury. A mistrial was declared after the jury deadlocked at his first trial.
Prosecutors say Romkey stabbed 18-year-old Jacob Woodard four times in the stomach in April 2015 in a residential area. Woodward survived, but required an extended stay in the hospital.
The reduced charge means that Romkey will face a maximum penalty of five years in prison when he’s sentenced July 14. The original charge allowed for a sentence up to 10 years in prison.
