A Muscatine, Iowa doctor accused of trading medication prescriptions for sex has agreed to stop practicing medicine.
David Gierlus, 59, of Illinois City, Illinois was charged in federal court August 31, 2012 for allegedly distributing controlled substances in exchange for sexual favors from at least 30 women.
Gierlus was released on bond and initially confined to his home. That restriction was changed September 11, 2012 to a curfew requiring him to be in the home from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. so he could try to find work.
The Iowa Board of Medicine is investigating Gierlus.
A statement from the board issued September 26, 2012 said Gierlus, a family medicine doctor who practiced in Muscatine, Iowa, entered into an agreement with the state in which he promised not to practice any aspect of medicine “until the Board approves his return to the practice of medicine.”
