A chase that hit speeds over 110 miles per hour ended when the suspect car hit a police cruiser, killing the suspect driver and injuring a child in his car.
WHO-TV reports the chase started just before 3 a.m. Friday, February 15, 2013 when Clive police tried to stop a silver Volkswagen Passat near I-80 and Hickman Avenue because the vehicle’s license plate was partially obscured by a plastic cover.
Police said the driver appeared to pull into gas pumps at a nearby truck stop, but then took off again westbound on I-80.
The officer reportedly accelerated to 110 miles per hour and still couldn’t keep up with the Passat.
The pursuit continued on Highway 5 through Warren and Marion counties, then west on Highway 92 toward Indianola.
The Passat was westbound when it hit a police cruiser parked on 15th Street at Highway 92. The impact ripped the engine from the patrol car. The engine, and the suspect car, came to rest about a block away. The man driving the Passat was killed.
Police said they found a young child, who had been reported missing, on the floor of the Passat. The child was taken to a hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries.
No other injuries were reported. The name of the suspect driver was not yet released.
