THOMSON, Ill. — In an effort to boost recruitment of staff at Thomson Prison in Carroll County, the Bureau of Prisons has approved a 25% relocation and recruitment incentive.

The incentive applies to all departments at the prison and will be available to all new employees or existing employees who choose to transfer to Thomson.

“This is an important step forward in bringing new talent to Thomson in order to address their staffing needs,” said Congresswoman Bustos. “Initiatives like this help strengthen the workforce, ensure the facility can compete with others in the region and support the surrounding community’s economy. I thank my colleagues for their partnership on this issue and will continue to work alongside them to put forward initiatives to recruit and retain staff.”

As of October, the prison was only at 55% staff.

"We're the lowest staffing in the Bureau of Prisons, so we need help," said Jon Zumkehr in a previous report. Zumkehr is the president of the Local 4070 chapter of the American Federation of Government Employees, the largest federal employee union.

The bonus requires a service commitment that includes one year for recruitment and two years for relocation.
