Quad Cities River Bandits first home game with stadium surrounded by flood water

River Bandits owner Dave Heller says the team is extremely lucky they were on the road while the Mississippi River at Rock Island reached its highest point.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — The Quad Cities River Bandits are returning to Modern Woodmen Park Tuesday, May 9 after being on the road for two weeks.

News 8's Charles Hart spoke with River Bandits owner Dave Heller who said they're extremely lucky they were away while the Mississippi River at Rock Island reached its highest point of 21 and a half feet the week of May 1, 2023.

"The schedule could not have worked out any better for us," Heller said.
"We were on the road, scheduled to be on the road for the past two weeks. It's our only two week road trip of the entire year, and it happened right in the middle of flooding. In fact, the flood crested right smack in the middle of those two road trips."

As of Tuesday, May 9, the parks flood walls are still successfully keeping waters out of the field, and the River Bandits are ready to be back home against the Cedar Rapids Kernels. A large amount of the parking lot is still under water, but fans can park for free, where spots are available. Heller said they can also park downtown.

"The city did a great job of dealing with the flood of managing the flood," Heller said.

The game starts at 6:30 p.m. and on Tuesday's general admission is only $2.

The National Weather Service expects the Mississippi River at Rock Island to fall below Major Flood Stage by Monday, May 15th.
