Wednesday, May 10

1:30 p.m. | Davenport, Bettendorf updates

The City of Bettendorf says River Drive, Grant Street and 6th Street have reopened as the Mississippi creeps back into its banks. Public works crews cleaned and inspected the roadways for damages and removed concrete barriers to ensure floodwaters didn't harm the traffic lights.

Crews are now focusing on Leach Park, which remains closed to the public. Workers will start removing debris and the concrete flood wall on May 11, but there is no reopening date set as of this update.

Tuesday, May 9

1:20 p.m. | Roads, some flooded areas will start reopening soon in the Quad Cities

Flood waters are receding in the Quad Cities, with talks of some previously closed areas being reopened soon. For example, Visit Quad Cities says its Davenport destination center won't reopen until next week.

In Moline, cleanup is just beginning. River Drive and Ben Butterworth Parkway will remain closed for cleaning and inspection. City maintenance staff will be cleaning up debris and silt with help from the Moline Fire Department starting next week.

All businesses on Moline's River Drive are still open!

Floodwaters are receding, but the cleanup is just beginning. Please be patient as River Drive and the Ben Butterworth...

Friday, May 5

River levels officially crested in Burlington yesterday afternoon. We are on track to see levels recede over the next week with many areas dropping to moderate flood stage by the middle and end of next week.

We do have rainfall in the forecast through the upcoming weekend. We will watch rainfall activity closely. If we end up getting more rain than expected, we could see the recession of the river delayed a little longer.

2:00 p.m. | NWS maintains crest of 21.6 feet in Rock Island, eyes Rock River levels

NWS Senior Service Hydrologist Matt Wilson gave another update on the river's levels Thursday afternoon, stating that precipitation in the next week looks to be less than an inch. That's a good sign for the area, especially for tributaries like Rock River.

Rock River is at 10.67 feet, which is near the action flood stage of 11 feet. Wilson said it's forecasted to reach 11 feet by Sunday, April 30. It'll continue to rise with the Mississippi.

The Mississippi River is expected to reach its crest of 21.6 feet by either late Sunday night or early Monday morning. By Wednesday, Mary 3, the river will begin to recede for those north of New Boston and Keithsburg.

The National Weather Service is maintaining its forecasted 21.6-foot crest for the Quad Cities area, which is expected to hit either Sunday night or Monday morning.

As of Wednesday, the river is about 2 feet shy of the crest in the Quad Cities. Most of River Drive from Division to Federal streets in Davenport is underwater. NWS Hydrologist Matt Wilson said rainfall next week looks minimal, so there isn't much change in crest levels.

After the river crests, it will slowly recede back into its banks.

2:30 p.m. | NWS provides an update

The Mississippi River in the Quad Cities metro area is closer to its forecasted 21.6-foot crest.

During Tuesday's briefing, Senior Service Hydrologist at the National Weather Service of the Quad Cities Matt Wilson said the snowmelt up north may not contribute to the crest as much as previously assumed because of current cold temperatures.

Instead, rainfall could impact river levels.

"High water on the Mississippi is backing up smaller creeks and tributaries. Though this alone should not cause flooding — or if it does cause some flooding — it will be in that minor flooding category in that localized area. But these are areas that we do need to be particularly cautious of if we do get precipitation events because they won't react the same way that they normally would," said Wilson. "If we were to get a smaller to a medium precipitation event those could create some flooding potential in those areas."

But, Wilson said not to assume flooding won't happen if the Quad Cities doesn't see heavy rainfall.

"Since we haven't had a lot of rain, people might not expect the creeks to come up quite so quickly. But because they are backed up even smaller rain events could cause some outsized flooding for those for that type of precipitation."

The National Weather Service of the Quad Cities said they expect Mississippi River levels to reach 21.6 feet by the morning of May 1.
