Head-on collision Monday on US 6 leaves 1 driver dead

U.S. 6 was blocked off Monday at Glenwood Road for several hours following the incident.

COLONA, Ill. — A head-on collision at the intersection of U.S. Highway 6 and East 200th Street in Colona caused police to briefly block off the highway Monday, Aug. 1 at Glenwood Road.

According to the Henry County Sheriff's Office,  a sedan was traveling east on Rt. 6 when it went over the center line into westbound traffic and struck an SUV.

The drivers of the two vehicles were the only people involved in the crash.

The sedan's driver, 78-year-old Raymond Rankin, was pronounced dead at the scene Monday morning, according to Henry County Coroner Melissa Watkins. Rankin had recently moved to Rock Island and previously lived in Geneseo.

An autopsy on Rankin was done Tuesday, Aug. 2 in Peoria.

The driver of the SUV was sent to the hospital in an ambulance. New8 also saw MedForce Air Medical on the scene.
