Iowa restaurants, gyms, salons allowed to partially reopen statewide

Gov. Kim Reynolds' daily press conference Wednesday, May 13, 2020 at 11 a.m. on how the coronavirus pandemic is affecting the state.

IOWA, USA — Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds' daily press conference Wednesday, May 13, 2020 at 11 a.m. on how the coronavirus pandemic is affecting the state.

Iowa confirmed 377 new cases for a total of 13,289 Iowans who have tested positive with the coronavirus. An additional 17 people have died from the virus meaning it is confirmed 306 Iowans have died from COVID-19.

Salons, barbershops, massage parlors, tattoo establishments, restaurants, fitness centers, libraries, and race tracks are allowed to reopen in the 22 counties where they previously remained closed.

These businesses across the state are allowed to reopen to 50% capacity on May 15.

"All restrictions currently lifted in Iowa's 77 counties will be expanded statewide, Reynolds said.

Those 65-years or older or those with underlying health conditions are recommended to continue to stay home.

The governor said the state's plan to manage the virus is moving into a recovery phase. Bars and casinos are still not allowed to reopen and Reynolds said a decision on allowing summer sports will be evaluated.

"We can and must reopen our economy," Reynolds said. "We are doing it in a phased in approach. We are going to monitor it on a daily basis. I have full confidence in Iowans and our businesses to do the right thing."
