Iowa governor emphasizes 'personal responsibility' as state rolls back more restrictions

IOWA, USA — Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds' daily press conference Thursday, May 7, 2020 at 11 a.m. on how the coronavirus pandemic is affecting the state.

There are 655 new positive cases for a total of 11,059 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Iowa. Twelve people have died from the virus meaning 231 Iowans have now died.

Reynolds announced Wednesday a rolling back of some restrictions in Scott County and 21 other counties. 

Malls are allowed to reopen at 50% capacity and all common seating areas must remain closed. Other retailers are allowed to open as well under the same guidelines.

"If you don't feel comfortable going to these establishments then don't go," Reynolds said.

The rolling back of restrictions came after Reynolds traveled to Washington D.C. to meet with President Donald Trump on Iowa's response to the pandemic.

When asked if Iowans should also feel free to begin traveling, Reynolds again emphasized resident's "personal responsibility" to make their own decisions. 

The governor said those with preexisting conditions or who are more vulnerable to getting sick should remain at home.
