Motorcyclist dies in crash with car in Davenport

A Rock Island man riding a motorcycle is dead after an overnight crash with a car.

DAVENPORT, Iowa-- A Rock Island man riding a motorcycle is dead after a crash with a car.

The man, 26-year-old Jarrade Smith, was riding a motorcycle southbound on Harrison Street when an east-facing car stopped at a stop sign on 14th Street pulled out into the Harrison Street intersection just before 10 p.m. on Monday, August 26, according to a statement from the Davenport Police Department.

Smith "panic-braked" and lost control before crashing into the side of the car, according to police. He was thrown into the driver's side of the car.

An ambulance took Smith to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries. The driver of the car, who was also from Rock Island, reported no injuries.

"Prior to the crash the motorcycle was observed travelling at a high rate of speed and driving recklessly by numerous witnesses," the police statement said.

WQAD is working to verify initial reports indicating there were two motorcycles at the scene.

Police are currently investigating the crash.

A vigil was held Tuesday, August 27 for Smith. Police showed up to the vigil after trucks blocked the roads and several motorcyclists performed motorcycle tricks in the deceased's honor. No word on any tickets or arrests. Police were seen questioning several attendees.

Editor's note: In a previous version of this story the headline incorrectly stated there were two cars and one motorcycle involved in the crash.
