DAVENPORT, Iowa — The president and CEO of Genesis Health System will be leaving the company next year, according to a news release from the health care provider.

Doug Cropper, Genesis's president and CEO, announced on Dec. 12 that he will be leaving his position in June 2023 to pursue a full-time leadership position with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Cropper's exit from the company will be the end of his 14-year tenure at Genesis after a 41-year-old career in health care; serving in various administrative roles at hospitals across Utah, Minnesota and Virginia prior to his arrival at Genesis in 2008.

He and his wife, Lynne, will serve as mission leaders for one of the Mormon Church's over 400 global missions, having accepted a three-year commitment to full-time mission leading.

“Our Genesis staff responded to COVID-19 in innovative ways and served our community with stamina, resilience, compassion and commitment during very difficult times,” Cropper said. “And they have continued to serve – and do even more – as we have faced recent staffing challenges with the rest of the nation.”

Cropper led Genesis to recognition as one of the top 15 health systems in the country in both 2020 and 2021, guided the company through the COVID-19 pandemic and all of its associated challenges, expanded hospitals and built new facilities across the Iowa and Illinois sides of the river and began a partnership with fellow Iowa-based health provider MercyOne.

“Doug Cropper’s strong leadership over the past 14 years has put Genesis on a positive path forward, even in these increasingly challenging times in healthcare,” said C. Dana Waterman III, Chair of Genesis Health System’s Board of Directors. “He will leave a lasting legacy at Genesis, and his passion for quality, and safe and compassionate care for our patients will benefit our community for years to come.”

Genesis's Board of Directors has already selected Cropper's successor: Chief Clinical Officer/Chief Medical Officer Kurt Andersen, M.D. He has served Genesis since 1997, serving as a family physician and executive prior to his role as the CCO/CMO.

“While I am saddened to not lead the full integration of Genesis into MercyOne, I am confident in Dr. Andersen’s ability to lead Genesis after my departure,” Cropper said.
