GALESBURG, Illinois — An elderly person was reportedly killed in an overnight fire.

The fire was raging out of a home on the 1100 block of East South Street around 1:20 a.m. Wednesday, June 22, 2016, according to a report by WGIL.  Responders ended up finding the victim in the home where a portion of the ceiling had fallen in, according to Galesburg Fire Chief Tom Simkins.

Simkins described extremely heavy smoke billowing through the home and out of the windows, the report said.  He said it took first responders longer to get there because they couldn’t see through the smoke that was filling the street.

The home is likely a total loss, Simkins said, according to the report.

The identity of the victim was not yet being released, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
