BLUE GRASS, Iowa-- Over the past few years, vandalism has plagued "Community Club Park" in Blue Grass. But today, the park finally got a facelift.
Blue Grass Officer Garrett Jahns reached out to Lowe's Home Hardware store last April, asking for help replacing and repairing much of his town's central park. It took several months, but today, that request was granted.
Dozens of "Lowe's Heroes" spent the day at the park, replacing a vandalized storage shed and bathroom complex, repainting all of the pavilions, and installing new baseball bleachers and picnic tables.
The refurbishment cost around $2,500, and Lowe's footed the entire bill. But it's thanks to the people, and police, of Blue Grass that everything was able to come together.
Volunteers at the park today described the project as a "community-wide effort." Officer Jahns explained, "Everyone uses the park. It is literally the heart of the community. It's the immediate focal point right when you get into town."
Blue Grass' city slogan is "A Great Place to Call Home." Today's restoration helped prove why that's the case. Officer Jahns estimated that around 100 community members pitched in today, helping however they could.
