Hackers accessed personal information of more than 91,000 Iowans when they breached the computers of Nationwide and Allied insurance companies.
Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller says the hack happened October 3. Nationwide spent most of November verifying the people whose information may be compromised, and sending out notices to those affected.
Miller’s December 4, 2012 press release said the hack affects about 1.1 million people across the U.S.
Nationwide says the hackers have not been identified.
Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, birth dates, marital status, addresses and other identifying information was compromised for policy holders and non-policy holders alike.
The impact is not just to Nationwide and Allied customers. If you, or your independent insurance agent, sought a quote from Nationwide, you could be affected. In some cases, customers might not realize that Nationwide was one of the companies for which their insurance agent sought a quote.
Nationwide is offering free credit monitoring and identity theft protection for one year to people they notified of the breach.
