DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s unemployment rate has dropped slightly to 2.4 percent in October, the lowest in the state in more than 18 years.

Iowa Workforce Development released the figures Friday, showing the unemployment rate had fallen from 2.5 percent in September. Iowa’s unemployment rate was the nation’s second lowest, behind only Hawaii’s 2.3 percent rate.

“This low unemployment rate makes it imperative for us to focus on building the skilled workforce necessary to power Iowa’s continued economic growth,” Beth Townsend, director of Iowa Workforce Development, said in an email.

Iowa’s rate was the lowest since March 2000.

The national unemployment rate was 3.7 percent in October.

There were an estimated 41,200 unemployed Iowa residents in October, and 1,647,100 people held jobs.
