I-80 special enforcement includes ‘more cops for more stops’

Stepped up traffic enforcement on Interstate 80 is underway in 11 states, including Iowa and Illinois.

Stepped up traffic enforcement on Interstate 80 is underway in 11 states, including Iowa and Illinois.

The I-80 Challenge was started by the Iowa Department of Public Safety after crash data showed more fatal crashes happened on I-80 in summer than at any other time of the year.

The goal I-80 Challenge is to eliminate fatal wrecks on the 2,900 miles of I-80.

Extra troopers will be focused on speed limit and safe driving enforcement for eight days from July 24 to 31, 2013 in California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.  In addition to speed limit enforcement, police will watch for seat belt use and impaired or unsafe driving.

“We're trying to get people to slow down and wear their seatbelts,” said Deputy Thomas Leonard from the Scott County Sheriff’s Department. “Our goal is for the next week until the 31st have no fatalities, and that’s our main goal in this situation here.”

Police departments all across the country are adopting the program.

Like “Click It or Ticket” seat belt enforcement, the I-80 Challenge is one of the largest joint law enforcement projects in the U.S.
