Hundreds of MidAmerican Energy customers lost electricity as storms moved through the Quad Cities area Thursday morning, September 4, 2014.
A cluster of strong storms began moving across eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois around 2 a.m. local time. Storms included intense lightning and heavy rain that caused flash flooding in some areas, especially south of the Quad Cities. Pea-sized hail was reported in downtown Rock Island and dime-size hail was reported in Johnson County, Iowa.
By 6 a.m., a flash flood warning was issued in Knox County, Illinois as several inches of rain was reported by News 8 viewers in Knoxville and Galesburg.
Scattered power outages were reported around dawn. More than 1,200 MidAmerican Energy customers were still without power as of 8:30 a.m., with most of those outages on the Illinois side of the Quad Cities. Coal Valley had 677 customers without power, 374 outages were reported in Henry County and 96 more in Rock Island County.
Fewer than 900 outages were reported in those areas by 9:15 a.m. Fewer than a dozen outages were reported in the Quad Cities area as of 11 a.m.
