SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — National Guard members and reservists now will be able to obtain Illinois driver’s licenses identifying them as veterans.

Illinois lawmakers approved a measure last year allowing veterans to obtain the special identification by providing a certificate of release or discharge from active duty. But some National Guard members and reservists couldn’t provide that paperwork.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed legislation Friday allowing those service members to submit additional forms that prove veteran’s status.

The licenses help veterans more easily obtain discounts and other benefits.

Department of Veterans’ Affairs Director Erica Jeffries says the law “ensures every man and woman who has served this state and nation is recognized.”

Sen. Pam Altoff was the bill sponsor. The McHenry Republican says it’s “a small way we can help support them for their sacrifice.”
