A driver died after being trapped inside a vehicle when it crashed into a home in rural Prophetstown and burst into flames.

A statement from the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office said the driver, who was heading westbound on Hahnaman Road, failed to stop at the “T-Intersection” at Yorktown Road shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday, March 14, 2015.

The vehicle then hit a guardrail, became airborne and slammed into a home at the intersection, according to the statement.  Once the vehicle was at rest inside the home, it erupted into flames.

“Fortunately, nobody inside the residence was injured and they were able to safely evacuate the residents,” said the statement. “Unfortunately, the driver was trapped inside the vehicle and succumbed to the fire.”

Police have not yet identified the driver. The crash is under investigation.
